Starting June 1st, All South Poll Breeders Will be Required to DNA Test Their Calves in Order to Register Them

Whether you are a homesteader with just one South Poll cow, or a cattleman with hundreds, you will be required to DNA test your calves in order to register any calves born after June 1st, 2025. Come hang out with other South Poll producers and let us show you how easy DNA testing can be. Hoof & Hide LLC has been DNA testing for over 8 years. We have partnered with Merck (who makes tissue sampling units) and Neogen (who processes the samples) to provide a hands-on experience for you to learn how to sample your calves.

Alternatives

We will go over the alternatives (hair, blood, and tissue sampling) and which might be best for different scenarios.

BBQ & Brush-Up

Eat some BBQ and then brush-up on your skills for tissue sampling. We will have practice "ears" made from leather. You will learn how to load the tissue sampling unit ("TSU"), take a sample from your practice "ear" and then learn how to unload the sampling unit.

Comaraderie, Contacts, and Confidence

Come make some new friends in the South Poll breed. Leave with contacts and confidence to help you once you get back home!

12:00 - 2:30DNA Testing Seminar

Tar Tut, East Texas Territory Manager for Merck's Ruminate Business Unit will cover: DNA testing, some ear tag options Merck provides, and the new interstate EID requirements.

Kara Jones, owner of Hoof & Hide LLC will answer questions about how we take samples on our ranch and answer any questions registering South Polls.

Kaci Herman, Neogen's Livestock Genomics Territory Manager for Texas will talk about submitting your DNA samples to Neogen as well as an overview of Neogen's Igenity Beef Genetic Profile and whether or not it may be a tool that can help your herd.

There will be drawings for prizes throughout the seminar including several tissue sampling applicators provided by Legacy Ag Credit. Must be present to win!

We will walk out and see Hoof & Hide LLC's South Poll herd and have time to answer some questions.

3:00 - 5:00Load Out of Cattle

If you purchased any cattle in the Hoof & Hide LLC auction the preceding evening, we will go through your paperwork and load out your cattle.
